Author Interview with Wendy Vella

1 What's your favorite part about writing Historical Romantic Fiction?

It’s kind of neat writing about a time you have never experienced. The clothes, the food the etiquette, it’s all so vastly different from the way we live when you take into account the freedom we have today. I love writing about the intrigues and scandals all wrapped up in polite society. It really was a decadent time and some of the exploits the nobility got up to all in the name of fun would make your hair stand on end!

2 How much research goes into writing Historical Fiction and do you think it’s more than another genre?

I think it depends if you’re writing a scene in your book about a specific event or battle that actually happened, then there is certainly more research required. I’ve always read a lot about the Regency Era so I have some knowledge about those years so for the most I know what I need for my books. I usually make notes as I go if I need more and then get to them later. As to if there is more research than other genres I don’t think so, I mean if you are writing about SAS or the police or firemen (yes I love men in uniforms) you would still be researching or world building so I would say it all evens out over the book.

3 Do you have plans to write in another genre?

Yes I have written a contemporary and have another started.

4 Do you have a favorite character, one that means more to you and why?

I like my hero Patrick in The Reluctant Countess. First appearances show him to be unsmiling, formidable and a bit arrogant but when you start to peel away his layers he’s full of the same character flaws that mar many of us. He has a weakness for those less fortunate than himself and when he falls for Sophie, the heroine, he falls hard although he tries to persuade himself otherwise. He has all the traits I love in a man, big, honourable and would wade through a tone of manure to save the woman he loves, my kind of guy!

5 What are your future writing plans, any books in the works?

I have a few things on the go at the moment but I really want to finish this contemporary I have started. Its fun writing something different but I do have to remind myself from time to time not to put any historical jargon in there.

6 What is your all time favorite book?

Cross Stitch by Diana Gabaldon

7 Do you prefer paper or ebooks and why?

I’m coming around to ebooks because I can carry more than one at a time in my handbag. I also like to be able to load up more than one in a series or if I find an author I like I can download everything they’ve written.

8 Do have a special habit to encourage your writing (ie. music, coffee, etc.)

I write with my headphones on I always have, the music usually gets my in the mood to be creative if I’m not to start with.

9 What do you do when you aren't writing?

I do a lot of road cycling with my husband and read as much as time and family let me. I also still work so my days are fairly full.

10 What will you do to celebrate the release of THE RELUCTANT COUNTESS?

My friends want to have a dress up party in theme with the book which should be fun. I’m leaving the planning up to them which scares me a bit, but I’m looking forward to hunting for a costume!
Book Blurb
From Wendy Vella comes a Cinderella story of whirlwind passion between a dashing earl and a beautiful countess—and the secret that threatens to tear them apart.
Regal, poised, and elegant, Sophie, Countess of Monmouth, is everything that a highborn lady should be. But Sophie is hiding a past that is far from royal. When Patrick, Earl of Coulter, realizes that her story doesn’t add up, he resolves to find out the truth of what Sophie and her sister-in-law are concealing. Although Sophie has every reason to avoid him, the handsome and charismatic Patrick awakens something wicked deep within her soul . . . a powerful need that Sophie must stifle in order to protect her place in society.
Despite Sophie’s humble background, the raven-haired beauty has won Patrick’s heart. But what Sophie needs now is an ally. Viscount Myles Dumbly, the disgruntled former heir of Monmouth, is determined to expose Sophie as a fraud to recapture his lost inheritance. Soon Patrick is drawn into a fight for both their lives. Somehow he must find a way not only to rescue Sophie from poverty once and for all, but to keep her in his arms forever.
