The Seven Markets
by David Hoffman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The Seven Marketsby David Hoffman has it all, time travel, fairies, a curious, strong main character on the adventure of her life. It all starts when young Ellie finds a flyer for a market coming to town, yet no one is talking about it and to her, this is huge! Ellie visits seven markets with the first starting in the eighteenth century and the last ending far into the future. Each market is unique with its own flare and flavor, magic and mystery. Each market only comes around every one hundred years. Century after century, Ellie re-visits the market. How, you ask?, because she wanted more out of life than being married to a working class farmer. What she got was tricked into giving her name to a fairy then being glamored by a Fae Prince. When he tires of her, he marries another, leaving Ellie most definitely disenchanted, but fated to continue the market cycle.
I must give author David Hoffman TONS of credit for his creative thinking! He has built a world full of fantasy that skips a century at a time, changes venues for the market and is able to introduce new characters throughout! Could the large time skips relate to the abrupt scene changes? Giving the reader a feel for what a difference a century makes?
The Seven Markets is a book to sit and truly read, to pay attention to, yet relax enough to go with the flow! So let the world around you disappear while you read!
