If Only We by Jessica Sankiewicz Virtual Tour & Giveaway

One false step and you’re trapped.

By Jessica Sankiewicz

Contemporary Young Adult Romance
Publication Date:  October 27, 2013

They say all it takes is one wrong move and you lose the game. One false step and you’re trapped. One slip-up in your choice of words and you ruin a friendship forever. That is what they say. They say I lost.

I do not believe them.

At the end of the summer after graduation, Adrienne wonders what happened to cause her life to be in ruins. She isn’t getting along with her mom, her stepsister isn’t talking to her, and, to top it off, the boy she’s been in love with doesn’t want anything to do with her. She believes the turning point was a choice she made at graduation. When she wakes up the next day, she has been transported back three months to that moment, the one where everything started to fall apart.

Adrienne realizes she has been given a second chance—and this time she doesn’t want to mess anything up. Reliving the entire summer, though, turns out to be a lot harder than she thought. As the same days and weeks go by, she starts to see how simple decisions can make a huge impact on the world around her. Despite knowing some of what lies ahead, there are some things she didn’t anticipate. She thought she knew what mistake led her to where she ended up the first time. She was wrong.

And by the time summer is over, she discovers what was really at stake.

What Inspired Me to Write If Only We

If Only We started out as a small idea. I can't remember exactly what triggered it, but I have a feeling it came from a train of thought that kept bouncing around until it landed. A lot of my ideas come from twists on things in real life, or sometimes things I anticipate as possibly happening in real life, or when my brain is just on a roll and ends up so far from the original idea it takes forever to figure out where it stemmed from. I'll just be sitting around thinking and then an idea forms. When the idea forms, I have to write it down immediately.

Back to where If Only We started. I could picture the scene in the first chapter between Adrienne and Chevy. It had this intensity to it, although I wasn't sure the exact reason why just yet. I just knew both of them were upset about something important. Then I got to thinking, what if this all happened differently? If one of them did something different, what could have happened instead? Thus the time-travel aspect was born and the idea of a true second chance.

The original idea that I wrote down honestly made no sense at all. I got my idea notebook out recently to find it and couldn't understand where I was attempting to go with it back then. Luckily, when I pulled it back out again a year later for NaNoWriMo I managed to fill in all the holes and discover the reasons why Adrienne and Chevy were so upset. Then it became necessary for me to give Adrienne her second chance. Not just necessary, I felt compelled to.

I had no clue when I first came up with this scene that it would become what it is. Looking back on it, I am very pleased with how it developed and changed in the last three years. Although writing it had its ups and downs, I'm glad that I was finally able to complete that scene and tell Adrienne's story the way it needed to be told.

Dii's Review:
What if one of the most emotionally devastating moments of your life could be re-lived, maybe changed? Could you change the outcome? Would it change your history, your relationships, the people around you?

If Only We by Jessica Sankiewicz is a breath of fresh air in the young adult fantasy genre that will cause you to remember those times you wish you could have a do-over. Her writing is smooth, the plot is a great one and the world Ms. Sankiewicz draws for us is very real, very well-done! Adrienne is filled with that youthful conviction that she can save her world from disaster, all by herself with both selfish and then completely unselfish acts on her part. She is sweetly likable and easily related to with her naïve but heartfelt plans while each character lends an air of reality to this tale and their roles support our main character perfectly.

Author Bio:Jessica is the 28 year old author of IF ONLY WE, a YA contemporary coming out in October 2013. You can often find her either reading or marathon watching TV on DVD, her favorites being Castle and Veronica Mars. She frequently mismatches her clothes and giggles uncontrollably. She knows almost every Billy Joel song by heart. She collects books and toys, and she has an intense love of cats and lemurs. Currently in the midst of her quarter-life-crisis, she is still takin' names and getting very close to reaching an epiphany.
