In eighteenth century Kentucky on a small farm, a young couple prepare for the completion of their family. Their first child is only months from being born, but Peter must leave his family to journey to France on an assignment from “the Colonel.” Linda is left in the capable hands of an elderly and kind midwife, while the farm is to be run by two young orphan boys. While Linda waits for Peter’s safe return, Peter and his guide and newfound friend become the targets of death. The baby’s birth is imminent and there has been no word from Peter. In a time when birthing can be a life-threatening event, Linda faces her ordeal alone, except for the love of her patchwork family.
Finally home, Peter races to his beautiful wife only to find that his homecoming is bittersweet and his life is forever changed.

Angel Musk knows how to grab on to every ounce of emotion and pours it into her tale in spades. After building her world and setting the stage for her characters, her story becomes a gentle and warm tale of love, loss and finding a new kind of strength through a new kind of love in a small slice of history.

I received this copy from the author in exchange for my honest review.
