Mac’s girlfriend, Kate Bell, thinks she’s seen a ghost. Wes Harrison, Kate’s former boyfriend, supposedly perished twelve years ago in a boating accident. But now she swears a man she spotted in a crowded theater lobby is Wes. Mac has his doubts--it was only a fleeting glimpse. But to calm her shattered nerves, he starts making inquiries.

A clue leads him from his home in St. George, Florida, to a Texas orphanage. There he uncovers startling information that turns both his and Kate’s world upside-down. Diamond smuggling, sex, deceit, and murder are just part of the twisted tale that emerges from Kate’s earlier life. Using wit, grit, and the ingrained military training of a former Marine, Mac starts to fit the pieces of this scrambled puzzle together.

Further clues point to the Palmetto Royale Casino and Resort near St. George. He and Kate discover that the casino is a front for big drug deals. When they barely escape a murder attempt, Mac knows he’s on the right track.

But he better play his cards right–because losing this high-stakes game could cost him his life.

Deadly Ruse: A Mac McClellan MysteryMy Review
Deadly Ruse by E. Michael Helms
Mac is Back! After his brilliant performance and adventures in Deadly Catch, Mac McClellan returns in another fast paced mystery thriller, thanks to E. Michael Helms and his latest novel, Deadly Ruse. I guess some guys are just magnets for intrigue!
When Kate sees a ghost from her past, it’s hard to believe, because this ghost has been dead for twelve years, or has he? Now a PI in training, Mac is determined to find out how the dead has been raised and why this man has gone to such extremes not to be identified. Former Marine mac is on the case, but discovers that the resurrection of Wes is only the tip of the iceberg. Murder, deceit, diamonds and danger are all hidden below the surface, but as Mac travels to Texas, he makes a discovery that puts suspicion on the one woman he wants to protect. Is Kate somehow involved? It may take a leap of faith on Mac’s part to believe Kate’s word against the mounting evidence that leads back to an orphanage and bonds made there. Is he out of his league or has he got a few tricks in his Student Private Detective Kit?

E. Michael Helms has done it again! A little grit, a gutsy hero, a little romance and a twisted mystery to unravel, all with the feel of an old-time mystery in a contemporary world, Mr. Helms has built a tension-filled tale that begs to be read. No over-the-top super heroes, just good old – fashioned sleuthing form a guy who has a few rough edges and is willing to rush in where wise men fear to go! Like a good murder mystery that races through the maze of twists, pulls in some amazing side tales and characters, all while keeping you glued to each page? You are going to love Mac McClellan’s latest book!

I received an ARC edition from E. Michael Helms in exchange for my honest review.
