Excerpt 3

Hey, wait up,” Harper calls as I run ahead. It’s an early morning and we’re running in the park. Isabelle suggested I join Harper on his regular run when I mentioned to her that I started running two weeks ago. Harper was dubious at first. I think he was afraid I’d slow him down. But I push myself every day to get the poison out of my system.
The poison being Chris, of course.
The day Chris broke my heart I crashed at Izzy’s place. The next morning, when I knew he was at work, Izzy helped me move my stuff from his place to hers. We managed to avoid him altogether. Now, my boxes litter her upstairs hallway, and I sleep on an air mattress. Harper has been evicted back to his place and he’s none too happy about it, but he puts up with me because I’m Isabelle’s friend. He’s great like that.
What’s the rush?” he says now, breathing almost normally.
I shrug, but the gesture gets lost in the movement of my entire body.
You’re pushing yourself like you’ve got a marathon to win next week,” he says. “Why don’t you try enjoying it instead?”
I want to say ‘are you crazy, this is not about enjoyment’. But I don’t. Mostly, because I’m tragically out of breath.
Don’t beat yourself up about Chris.”
I risk a sideways glance, but I quickly lose half a stride to him. I don’t want to get into a discussion about Chris with Harper, of all people.
He’s a guy,” he says, like that explains it all. The arrogance of it annoys me so much that it gets me to speak.
Guys do stupid stuff, Chloe.” He chuckles. “Haven’t you learned that already?”
I stop. Now I want to talk about it, but I can’t do it with my heart trying to gain independence by jumping out of my throat.
A few paces ahead, he stops too when he notices I’m not following him.
So? Is it supposed to be okay because he’s a dude?”
He walks back the few yards separating us. He looks intimidating, so tall and serious.
No,” he says. “But you’re too smart to be blinded by one stupid act.”
It was a pretty big and pretty stupid act.”
Getting love advice from Harper is surreal. I wonder what Isabelle will have to say about it. I don’t know how much he even knows about Chris and me. I never discussed it with him, so whatever he knows must’ve come from Izzy.
Was it a pretty big love or a pretty small fling?” He raises one eyebrow at me, like a displeased teacher, and I want to slap him across his gorgeous face and thank him at the same time.
Shouldn’t we be running?” I grumble and start off again, although my legs are killing me.
I wish things were as simple as he put it. But they’re far from it.

Character interview – Chloe
Chloe’s with me today to answer a few questions so the readers can get to know her better. Thanks for agreeing to an interview, Chloe.
No problem. But I think the book says it all. It pretty much exposes all my dirty little secrets so I don’t know what else I can tell you. It’ll be hard for me to improve the impression I’ve made, won’t it?
Well, let’s start with first impressions, then. What impression do you think you make on people when they first meet you? How about after they’ve known you for a while?
Most people usually think I’m a bimbo who’s all about fun and partying, a bit on the slutty side because I’ve had a few boyfriends. And after they get to know me they know I’m a bimbo ... (laughter) No, kidding. I think they think of me as this poised, new agey girl who spends way too much time thinking about what other people are thinking. They also think I’m the coolest person ever.
What are you most proud of about your life?
Having the best friends. And keeping them. Because I think that confirms to me that I must be doing something right.
Tell me about your best friend.
Isabelle is a terrific artist, her paintings blow me away every time. She’s also the most loyal person I know. She always has my back, even when I don’t deserve it. But she can be indecisive. She doesn’t always know what she wants – Harper? Hello? – and it’s at these moments that I come in and help her out. (Evil grin.)
What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done to someone?
I’ve treated someone pretty badly recently. He is this genuinely amazing person and he was trying to give me a precious gift – the most precious gift one can receive in life – and I turned him down. Again and again. That was pretty shitty of me.
You mean Chris?
What are you most afraid of?
Losing the people in my life, I guess. My friends and family – I can’t even imagine a life without them. They’re an integral part of me, and if they all left they’d each take a piece of me, and there’d be nothing left, would it?
What’s the most important thing in your life?
See the previous answer. Also, the basis for those sorts of firm and enriching relationships is honesty, I think. So that’s the most important thing. Being genuine in your relationships, no pretending. Being open and honest and real.
What do you like best about Chris? Least?
Oh, wow. What I like best about Chris? He’s this really warm, friendly, good person who can get everyone in a good mood, who will always help a friend out, who’s always there for you, no matter what. He has a sort of innocence in him, like, he’s completely unable of being unkind. Also, his kissing skills are off the charts. So there’s that.
What I like least? Hm ... That he leaves his stuff all over the place and never tidies up after himself. Yeah, that’s just ... ugh.
How do you feel about your life right now?
Well, it’s complicated. I feel like I have the chance to start something really, really good. But I’m not sure I deserve him. It, I don’t deserve it. (Silence) Okay, him. I admit it. He’s gorgeous in all sorts of ways and I know I don’t deserve him, but ... I want him ... badly.
Oh, and I’m looking forward to studying Psychology, too.

  2. Thanks for hosting me today. :-)

  3. Depends on my mood, I like both about equally. Thanks for sharing!

  4. I like them all. A bad boy with a tender side is always nice to read.

  5. I agree with Brooke! There is something about a bad boy with a soft side that is perfect! Although, a good boy with a bad streak, well, that's pretty good, too!
