Synopsis:

Urus Noellor--a boy born deaf who is about to be publicly branded as a burden, incapable of being the warrior his people demand--stands upon a rooftop, poised to throw himself over the edge. His failed attempt at suicide unlocks within him a long-dormant form of magic thought to have died out thousands of years before, a power that may be the key to saving the world from an equally ancient enemy.

Urus and his companions--Goodwyn, the greatest warrior in Kest, and Cailix, a mysterious orphan--must find a way to stop a powerful group of sorcerers from destroying the five long-hidden vertices that ward the world against threats from beyond, while fighting off threats from within. They soon learn that the scope of the coming danger may be more dire than any of them could have imagined. As the battle for the vertices spreads to the neighboring realms, Goodwyn must face the realities of war and death; Cailix discovers a devastating truth that could change everything; and Urus discovers his uncanny gifts and courage as he peels away clues to his true identity. But even as Urus gains the power he has always craved, he experiences it all in profound, lonely silence.

The Fifth Vertex (The Sigilord Chronicles, #1)My Review:
The Fifth Vertex by Kevin Hoffman
Page one, sentence one and I’m already in knots! Urus should be graduating, his heart says he wants to be a warrior, but he failed the gauntlet one too many times and his deafness makes him a burden to his people. He would rather die than be cast out in shame. Something magical happened when he jumped from a tall building, it came from within Urus. In a world of magical of magic, strife and gifted creatures, Urus is not meant to die and with his best friend, Goodwyn, a powerful warrior at his side, they begin a quest to discover who or what Urus really is, how much magic he contains and how he can control and realize the powers within. With Urus as our narrator for much of this amazing journey, we see the world through his eyes and perception.

Cailix is an orphan, kidnapped by evil mages, learning all she can to one day overpower them. As Urus and Cailix paths cross, the three of them endure hard fought battles, separation and challenges that can only be shared in the telling by these brave souls. Is it possible that Urus has more power than the best mages? Is he a special being just beginning to come into his own? Will his destiny create an indelible mark on history? What is in store for these three travelers as they find an entire new world in far off lands?

The Fifth Vertex by Kevin Hoffman is a tale of an epic journey to discovery of one’s inner self as well as the world around. From the many varied beings, who are as different as night and day to the fierce battles that are fought, Mr. Hoffman never lets up. Beautifully detailed scenes come to life. Characters come to life, with distinct personalities and attitudes. Good versus evil plays a strong role in moving this tale along at the perfect speed, smooth and steady. One’s imagination can run wild with the possibilities of living in this fantasy world. A beautiful, fantasy world to get lost in for young adults and all readers who enjoy a total escape from reality through the magic of this author’s pen.
I received this copy from Kevin Hoffman in exchange for my honest review.
