Synopsis:

Gargoyles were created centuries ago to protect mankind, but something went horribly wrong. Now only the sentinel—a mortal chosen to control the stone beasts—stands between them and their human prey.

When the latest sentinel is killed, Kate Mercer is destined to take his place. But Kate has enough going on in her life—like a skyrocketing film career, a delusional ex-boyfriend, and a crazed stalker who will stop at nothing to get to her. But the powers that be have decided, and Kate is transported to Shadow Wood, a mysterious castle that serves as a sanctuary for the supernatural. Although beautiful, Shadow Wood is no safe place for a mere mortal. Yet Kate is drawn not only to the gargoyles but also to Ian McGuire, a charming novelist who might be in the greatest danger of all.

As Kate decides whether to accept the most perilous role of her life, she discovers there are more secrets than answers within the castle’s walls. Her survival and Ian’s depend on her ability to master the gargoyles before time runs out. Is fate really cast in stone?

Of Shadow and StoneMy Review
Of Shadow and Stone by Michelle Muto

I love it when a much ignored paranormal creature with such a rich history finally gets their day, and it is happening now, right here in Michelle Muto’s Of Shadow and Stone. the world is filled with creatures of myth and fantasy, but no one is more important to good humans than the gargoyle, the protector. Gargoyles need a leader and their leader has died. Enter rising star, Kate, whose life has become a nightmare when her ex-boyfriend, bless his cheating heart, wants her back. But is he alone in his stalking her every move? Nightmares are crowding out restful sleep, and they are getting more and more disturbing. A castle, a man in shadows, and finally, the need to discover what is causing these shadows, does the castle exist? Why is it calling to her? Why are there gargoyles showing up everywhere Kate turns?

A strong woman, mature beyond her young years, Kate is determined to get to the truth of this dark man and his castle, because it is real and it has invaded her life, along with deadly gargoyles of every shape. Are they truly the protectors they are made out to be or do they need someone to lead them and direct their sense of justice? Is Kate “the one” or is there another who will need Kate’s help? As a woman in a career built on make-believe and that “anything can happen” world of acting, why shouldn’t she be able to accept a world where vampires, werewolves and gargoyles exist? The biggest question seems to be, have the gargoyles chosen Kate or has her destiny long been etched in the book of time? What of love? Can someone like her find love that will be true?

First, I must say I loved the attention to detail, rich with atmosphere, as Michelle Muto invites her readers to follow her down a dark path in a dark tale. A castle, vampires, werewolves and a human or two round out a cast that not only unlocks a world of fantasy, but one of danger and intrigue. Stalkers, gargoyles and Kate, a beautiful blend for a wonderful trip out of reality and into the world of a well-written book, grab your good luck charms and hop aboard! Who says that someone or something made of stone could not have a heart? Kate will learn to believe and accept or run and feel something missing in her life. A dark journey to a new world of make-believe comes to life!

I received this ARC edition from Skyscape in exchange for my honest review.
