New York Times bestselling author Maria V. Snyder wowed readers with Poison Study, the unforgettable story of poison taster Yelena. Now she's back with a new tale of intrigue.

Once, only her own life hung in the balance.

Oddly enough, when Yelena was a poison taster, her life was simpler. But she'd survived to become a vital part of the balance of power between rival countries Ixia and Sitia. Now she uses her magic to keep the peace in both lands and protect her relationship with Valek.

Suddenly, though, they are beset on all sides by those vying for power through politics and intrigue. Valek's job - and his life - are in danger. As Yelena tries to uncover the scope of these plots, she faces a new challenge: her magic is blocked. She must keep that a secret - or her enemies will discover just how vulnerable she really is - while searching for who or what is responsible for neutralizing her powers.

Yes, the days of tasting poisons were much simpler. And certainly not as dangerous,

Shadow Study (Soulfinders, #1)My Review:
Shadow Study by Maria V. Snyder

Shadow Study is a fast paced, action filled adventure of Yelena and Valek. The story is told by both their POV. Although they start out together, they quickly separate heading for different directs and paths.

From the first page, Yelena is under attack. Her magic has disappeared or is somehow blocked and its all being perpetrated by an unknown entity. Trying to keep this a secret for her safety, she is even reluctant to send a messenger to Valek for help.

Valek is busy trying to find the culprits behind the black market trading coming into his country, an order he can not disobey. Returning to his military position, he has to repair and mend some fences.

I saw this was a "new series" by Snyder so I jumped on it. I have to admit this is my first Maria V. Snyder book and I was lost. I could follow the bases of this story but it was serious catch up for me. Realizing it was a spin off, it made more sense.

That being said, this was a wonderful storytelling that pulled me in almost immediately. The intense and passionate characters really care about this magnificent world Snyder has created them. This is a world I'd like to explore starting from the beginning and reading all of Snyder's works.

I received this ARC copy of Shadow Study from Harlequin - Mira in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication Feb. 24, 2015.
