Jason is ready to ditch his best friends in his quest for fame and fortune!

When Jason and his friends form a garage band, they call it "No Frills" because they want to keep it real--even when they enter a band contest and pressures to alter their image mount. Then one day, due to a close encounter with lightning, Jason's life changes in a big way--but is he magically cooler or is it just his perception?

As he goes from blah to cool, his head swells as he takes his fifteen minutes of fame too seriously. His too-busy mother and fortune-telling grandmother don't get through to him. Even maybe-more-than-a-friend Layla is ready to give up on Jason, especially when he starts flirting with much-older Mindy. Only a rescued kitten keeps him even remotely grounded. It isn't until he loses the friendships with the band mates he once counted on that he realizes he has a major problem, and he worries it might be too late to fix it.

The Next Great Rock Star by Ann Herrick

Have you seen the stories about people who have been struck by lightning and lived? Sometimes their hair goes white. Jason dreams of being a great rock star. He is even part of a garage band called the No Frills. Then it happened, Jason was struck by lightning and his world changed, he changed and his mediocre talent became an over the top fan magnet.

The local mall is running a battle of the bands and No Frills enters, but their look, even their name has been altered and Jason is the star. Clearly he is not grounded in the reality of everything as his head and ego become too big for the rest of the band and bad feelings float dangerously near the surface. The only friend he has left is a stray kitten he is hiding in his room. Has Jason been so starved for attention that he has gone too far with this small time fame thing? Only Jason can fix the problem, but how? Will it take another lightning strike or big piece of humble pie?

Leave it to Ann Herrick to not only write a contemporary tale that is completely appropriate for tweens on up, but for also sending some great messages about changes in attitude, etc. The Next Great Rockstar is a wonderful coming of age story about losing focus on what is important in life and hopefully finding it again before relationships are destroyed and feeling hurt beyond repair. I highly recommend this as great gift for any young reader to enjoy!

I received this review copy from Ann Herrick in exchange for my honest review.
