A new beginning. Turning a leaf. All that crap.

After her divorce and the death of one of her patients, an ER nurse, Kelly Newland, searches for a fresh start in the little town of Churchston. As she learns to accept her failures in life, she befriends some of the locals, except for one disgruntled man, the hero everybody loves to hate.

He could feel their stares on his back, their judgments hovering over their heads.

Will Parker suffers from PTSD, and as the black sheep of the sleepy lakeside community, he struggles to get back up on his feet. Initially, Kelly and Will mix like oil and water, but as a series of dangerous incidents strike the people closest to them, their antagonism turns from cool to hot. It is only when they realize it is impossible to resist each other that a killer closes in on them, threatening the love they've dared to find.

Better Than the Best by Amabel Daniels

Better Than the BestLosing your spouse to another is heartbreaking, having to hide out in your bathroom as they “do the deed,” is, well…gross and this is exactly where we meet Kelly, hiding out wearing only a towel while her husband carries on like a stud muffin in their bed. Fast forward as our girl, a newly minted divorcee takes off to find a new life, away from her old one, away from the nightmares of a the accidental death of a patient under her care as a nurse.

Was it fate that brought her to small town of Churchston or some warped sense of cosmic humor? Determined to make lemonade out of the lemons life has been pitching at her, she finds several colorful and quirky friends as she begins her new life as a restaurant delivery girl and a boat rental girl on the beach. Only one dark cloud seems to be raining on her otherwise mostly sunny parade. Will Parker is as anti-social as a man can be. Coarse, crude and standoffish on a good day, this ex-soldier suffers from survivor’s guilt, PTSD and the heartbreak of being there when his brother and best friend was killed in war. Top that off with the head town, um, “crazed female dog” gunning for him at every turn, yeah, he has some painful memories, enough to crush any man, but he stands tall. Alone and tall and hating himself for living.

Picture clash of the Titans, if one of the were an injured soldier and the other, an outspoken sarcastic woman, both carrying enough baggage to make a bellboy swoon. Determined, Kelly is going to thaw this ice king out, although she can’t for life of herself figure out why, or is it that she will not admit why?.

And then things started happening, people around her or associated with start having accidents, being killed and she begins to feel she is the link, with good reason, but who is after her and why is she a target? Just when she and Will finally seem to be on the same page and their chemistry is finally coming together to make love and not war, the unthinkable happens …

It was a good day for readers when Amabel Daniels published Better Than the Best. Romance, sunny beaches, danger lurking, even on the waters, this is edge of your seat reading as a shadowy figure in their own side story finally breaches the light. Hang on to your shorts, this is suspense, humor, war and love, all rolled together in one fabulous package. Kelly is a sprite, wicked sarcastic, endearingly warm hearted and protective of those around her, a pint-sized powerhouse, for sure! Will, can be a little cavemanish, way too gruff, and downright rude, but beneath all that beats the heart of loneliness and pain. Toss in the town manwhore, the nasty clique of rough women, the gentle and kindhearted man and a town of small-minded idiots and trust me, the evil lurking in the dark takes this tale over the top of the gem pile for me! Great dialogue, intense conflict and a game of chicken played with emotions, this is non-stop entertainment!

I received this copy from Amabel Daniels in exchange for my honest review.
