London, 1887. As the city prepares to celebrate Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, Veronica Speedwell is marking a milestone of her own. After burying her spinster aunt, the orphaned Veronica is free to resume her world travels in pursuit of scientific inquiry—and the occasional romantic dalliance. As familiar with hunting butterflies as she is fending off admirers, Veronica wields her butterfly net and a sharpened hatpin with equal aplomb, and with her last connection to England now gone, she intends to embark upon the journey of a lifetime.

But fate has other plans, as Veronica discovers when she thwarts her own abduction with the help of an enigmatic German baron with ties to her mysterious past. Promising to reveal in time what he knows of the plot against her, the baron offers her temporary sanctuary in the care of his friend Stoker—a reclusive natural historian as intriguing as he is bad-tempered. But before the baron can deliver on his tantalizing vow to reveal the secrets he has concealed for decades, he is found murdered. Suddenly Veronica and Stoker are forced to go on the run from an elusive assailant, wary partners in search of the villainous truth.

(Veronica Speedwell #1)

A Curious Beginning (Veronica Speedwell, #1)Is there anything a better than a trip back to London in the late 19th century where men are whatever they want to be and women are expected to have vapors, delicate constitutions and while away their days having tea and maybe embroidering? The answer is yes! Give us a 19th century woman who is feisty, a trailblazer and quite frankly, doesn’t give a damn what others think. Meet Veronica Speedwell, a young woman, orphaned and raised by two quirky aunts who have passed on. Veronica comes home from one of her butterfly hunting trips only to find her home in shambles and her person about to be abducted by a hulking brute. Racing to her rescue is a refined German baron who vows to keep her safe, because he knows something about her that she doesn’t. Will he tell her? NOOOOOOOO.

Now in the company of a less than gentlemanly scientist of animal study, Veronica finds she is the target of death at any price orchestrated by a wealthy and powerful benefactor. She also learns that even the Royals have skeletons in their closets, living and dead.

A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn is a delightful read, filled with quirky characters, an intriguing plot and two unlikely allies on the run from death. Both Stoker and Veronica make lovable characters that keep this tale running at high speed. Love the settings, the humor, the strength of a very twisted plot and the pluck of our heroine!

I received this copy through a request from NetGalley & NAL in exchange for my honest review.

  1. I love these kinds of books! My mom read books of this type to me when I was little often. Like The Secret Garden, etc. Adding to my TBR!
