“Cat” Catalia Fisa lives disguised as a soothsayer in a traveling circus. She is perfectly content avoiding the danger and destiny the Gods—and her homicidal mother—have saddled her with. That is, until Griffin, an ambitious warlord from the magic-deprived south, fixes her with his steely gaze and upsets her illusion of safety forever.

Griffin knows Cat is the Kingmaker, the woman who divines the truth through lies. He wants her as a powerful weapon for his newly conquered realm—until he realizes he wants her for much more than her magic. Cat fights him at every turn, but Griffin’s fairness, loyalty, and smoldering advances make him increasingly hard to resist and leave her wondering if life really does have to be short, and lived alone.
A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet
(Kingmaker Chronicles, #1)

A Promise of Fire (Kingmaker Chronicles #1)She ran away to join a circus to save herself from the cruelties of the one person she should be able to run to, her mother. In a land of magic, myth and powerful gods, Cat has power, she is the legendary Kingmaker, but she hides the truth under a prickly fa├žade, razor sharp tongue and the personal fortress she has built around herself. Captured by a powerful warlord from the not very magical southern borders of the realm, Cat fears discovery more than death. Tethered to the brute, she tries every trick she knows to escape while providing entertainment for her captors. No, they are not filthy curs, and that is the problem. Griffin may be quiet and stone faced, but he is also a man of honor with a sly sense of humor that often shows up at Cat’s expense. Okay, I admit it, the guy is hot!

The fur will fly as Cat fights not only for physical freedom, but for the freedom of her heart that is slowly being captured. Little does she realize she may hold all of the cards in the game of love…

I swear by the gods, A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet is pure magic! From a cover to die for to the very end, I was a believer in the world Ms. Bouchet has created! I think I was shocked that it ended, I was so completely engrossed in each word, each page and each scene. From supporting characters that ran from quirky to loyal, powerful to charming, they formed the perfect accompaniment to Cat and Griffin.

Speaking of Cat, LOVED her attitude, her strength and her willingness to hide away in a lonely future to keep others safe and maybe live a day or two longer, herself. Griffin, of course seemed to live up to his name, a powerful being who seems larger than life, a quiet, yet forceful leader who loves country and home, yet around Cat, his demeanor transformed into a flaming hunk of turmoil and emotions he refused to acknowledge!

From the extremely fresh plot to each well-thought out sentence, I cannot recommend this new series highly enough! Just read it, you’ll understand, trust me!

I received an ARC edition from Sourcebooks Casablanca in exchange for my honest review.
