Before the sun rises, another will fall.

When Brooke Mariano is found murdered on the grounds of the powerful Everette family’s estate, it looks at first as though she may have been killed in order to keep the paternity of her unborn child a secret.

However, when another member of the Everette family turns up dead each night, it quickly becomes a race against time as Detective Ryan Xander and his partner try to discover which member of the family is the killer before the entire clan wind up dead.

Ryan’s only inroad to the secretive family is Sofia Everette. Shunned by her father for her refusals to obey him, and battling a mysterious illness, Sofia’s childhood dreams may be the key to saving her life and stopping the killer from exterminating the entire Everette family.

Two by Jane Blythe (Count to Ten, #2)

Two (Count to Ten, #2)And to think, all this time I thought my family could be the poster children for the word dysfunctional. You will not believe what goes on behind closed doors in the prominent Everette family. Tyrannical control, brutal coldness, a lack of respect for love, humanity and anything that doesn’t directly benefit the family, from the patriarch on down, almost everyone has a secret, some more deadly and perverted than others, but none as diabolical as the ones belonging to the murderer working overtime to assure that the poisonous blood of the Everettes washes down the drain from the Medical Examiner’s table.

Someone is picking off the Everettes one by one and the police have no idea who it is. What they do uncover are decades of rape, murders for fun and a family too afraid to speak out if the patriarch says no. In a twisted game of musical genes, grab a score card and try to keep up as this family stops just short of making everyone their own grandpa.

Only the beautiful and frail Sofia has a heart instead of a stone in her chest, but she is sickly, and believes she is dying. It is that willingness to believe the best in people that sparked more than a professional interest from the detective assigned to investigating the untimely deaths of her family. Ryan finds Sofia amazing, but his own past makes him terrified to take a chance on love with this wonderful woman. Then again, if he can’t keep her alive, it won’t matter.

Two by Jane Blythe is a complicated and thrilling ride giving the Grim Reaper overtime in collecting the dark family souls. As the tally goes up and the remaining family member numbers go down, the prime suspect changes as each bread crumb is dropped. Jane Blythe has nailed this one as one family, who seems to be afraid of their patriarch silently seethes with contempt against every other member and some of them even have extremely disturbing appetites usually only heard about on the late news. Prepare to not like most of the characters because they seem to have little value as human beings. Be surprised at the twists and turns and dark secrets revealed as those skeletons in the closet are uncovered by an unlikely source. I only wish I could have known Sofia as a healthy and vibrant woman! Fabulous reading, lots of twists and slimy characters who just may have deserved the end they received.

I received this copy from Jane Blythe in exchange for my honest review.
