A Tribute to Alan Black from E. Michael Helms

The world of letters has lost a talent, a friend, and an irreplaceable cog in the vast machinery that makes the writing world tick. Alan Black, writer extraordinaire, left an empty space at our communal table in January. Unfortunately, I never met Alan in person. However, I can truthfully say we became fast friends through email correspondence and our common bond as brother-writers who enjoyed "talking" writing.

Including Alan in the (above) highfalutin term "world of letters" would have grated on him to no end, and that makes me smile. Alan was a far better wordsmith than he gave himself credit for. He had this to say about his work:

"I'm not trying to write profound tales that change people's lives, but I prefer to think of myself as a literary entertainer."

Alan was that, and a whole lot more. He was a prolific and versatile writer. I was--and continue to be--impressed (and a bit envious) at the number of books he produced, and in the variety of genres. It seemed he always had a dozen works going at once. That he's left many projects for his beloved wife Duann to bring to fruition speaks volumes to Alan's productivity. Add to that his marketing and promotional skills. Back in the day Alan would've given P.T. Barnum a run for his money!

But it was never about Alan. It was all about his readers. They were his joy, the ones he wanted to make laugh or cry; to bring escape and pleasure to through his words. Alan, mission accomplished my friend!

I can't end this humble tribute without mentioning a favorite hobby Alan and I shared. Any time, any way, we conspired to aggravate and needle Dianne Bylo (aka Lady Dii, aka "the Alligator") to no end. I believe we succeeded. *;) winking

Alan will be missed, but his legacy remains. And when I feel the need to once again hear his voice--well, he's a close as my nearest bookshelf.
