Jiminella “Jinx” Sweetwater is a genius. She’s a scholar, an inventor, hardworking and loyal, and well known in the scientific circles around the University in Prosper City.

Being smarter than everyone else might seem like a good thing, but it isn’t. At least, it isn’t to Jinx who has two friends, a small condo, and no life.

After a fight with her best friend Wilder, it just gets worse. Someone breaks into her home and when her parents show up in all their hippie-like glory, Jinx has had enough and escapes to a small village by the sea.

Suddenly, Jinx finds herself involved in village life, living with the unpleasant Mrs. Fratinelli and trying her best to juggle all the things that end up on her plate. And then there’s calm, cool and gorgeous Dante – Snow’s boyfriend, who seems to see right through the shields Jinx has put up around herself, straight into her mind.

Sweet WaterBeing the smartest person on the block, or pretty much anywhere isn’t as fantastic as it may seem. Jiminella Sweetwater should know. She is brilliant, an inventor and owner of patents, hardworking and just plain lonely. Aside from her apartment and a couple of friends, she really has no life. When she has a terrible argument with her best friend, her condo is vandalized and her hippie parents show up after a long “family” hiatus, that’s it! Jinx calls a timeout on life and its stresses and heads for a small village by the sea.

Sounds idyllic, doesn’t it? Gentle waves caressing the shore, a quaint and cheerful village where everyone knows your name. In theory yes, but Jinx soon finds herself drawn into small town politics, village life and lives under the tough scrutiny of her new landlord, Mrs. Fratinelli, who may or may not be the devil incarnate with her comments and disapproval. Has Jinx accidentally taken on more projects than she can handle in an effort to fit in? Can she help it if she sees more than others, or can accurately rate the percentage of success taking one path or another?

As if that isn’t enough, Jinx soon finds that someone in town knows what she is thinking or feeling and he seems to be everywhere, just a touch away. Who and what is Dante that he can read her so well? A true friend? More? More important can he keep secrets?

When trouble comes to stalk Jinx once again, could it be her latest secret they are after or is it Jinx, herself? All she wanted to do was relax and blend in, but the shadows in the night want something more and they will stop at nothing to get it, including hurting Joe, the best friend she has ever had. She wanted to find friends who accepted her, brains, quirks and all, but what she finds is that she has put everyone in danger.

SWEET WATER by Lena North is a fascinating and different kind of YA read that adds a touch of the mysterious, a dollop of danger and tosses one lonely and lost Brainiac into the fire from the frying pan, only to discover that she does have friends, allies and she is not as alone as she thought. Will Jinx finally feel the love she has longed for? Can she finally stop with the fretting and worrying that is destroying her health? Has she finally found a place to feel normal, or as normal as she can feel?

I absolutely loved this one by the talented Lena North who always seems to create characters that feel like flesh and blood and maybe have some of the same emotional issues that we all face in real life.

I received an ARC edition from Lena North in exchange for my honest review.
