Everything She Lost by Alessandra Harris
Nina Taylor thought her mental breakdown was the worst thing that could have happened. Little did she know her fragile recovery would be tested to its very limits by the people she trusted most and a dark stranger she had never met.
Nothing could have prepared Nina for what she would face or who would betray her in her darkest hours. She tried to be a good wife, she had two wonderful children and a best friend who came along just when she needed her most.
Deja Johnson, a single mother struggling to raise her young son is running from bad decisions, bad luck and a monster from her past. Nina accepted her for who she was and Deja was a rock for the fragile Nina, but there was more hidden beneath the surface. It would be Deja’s actions that would bring Nina close to a relapse and Deja’s past that would add the extra push.
As Nina faces what she assumes are mental blackouts, even her marriage will suffer as her self-absorbed husband fails to provide the support she needs. Alone, scared and scarred by her own past, she is lured into a deadly plot for money and finds herself hanging on by a thread, and like a puppet on a string, she is led into the pits of a living hell, filled with paranoia, dark strangers and the return of a ghost from her own past. The more she leans on Deja for support, the less stable her world becomes and only Deja knows why.
Reading EVERYTHING SHE LOST by Alessandra Harris is like balancing on a tightrope with razor blades instead of a net below, if you fall. This is a psychological thriller at its most dark and devious. Ms. Harris has penned a tale of desperation, betrayal and woven only a fine thread of sanity for her main character, Nina to hold on to. I found myself reeling in anger, my nerves felt electric and this twisted tale had me riveted to every word. Nina is not the miracle poster child for recovery, she is struggling throughout, but she has heart and there is more to her than she even realizes. I liked her, I wanted her to get well, I wanted her to open her eyes as wide as she seemed to open her heart. Deja, wow, there is a well-written character, she is a friend in need, a liar, a desperate mother and in spite of her deeds, she, too was likeable, but far from perfect. I liked her, I hated her, not for her dark past, but for many of her current actions. Nina’s husband, not sure even his brief moments of kindness towards Nina could redeem him in my eyes, but he did seem to be a good father.
Alessandra Harris has set a new bar for drama and strong, well-defined characters that will get under your skin, as you lose yourself in this dark tale. From the first page to the very end, this is magnetic reading, told in powerful strokes of the pen. A highly recommended must read for those who dare to take a walk on the dark side of life and humanity.
