Daughter of the Goddess by Rita Webb Blitz and #Giveaway

Daughter of the Goddess

Publication date: November 20th 2013
Genres: Fantasy, Young Adult
The wind calls her to play.
Will she listen?
I was a nameless child abandoned on the temple doorsteps.
Soul, the gods called me. So they named me Nephecia.
My plans don’t include marriage to some silly nobleman. When I come of age, I will take vows and devote my life to serving the goddess of Light. As a priestess, a daughter of the goddess, I’ll make the world a better place.
The summer before my eighteenth birthday, an oracle arrives with word from the gods: I must leave the only home, the only family, I’ve ever known, to marry a stranger in a foreign land.
There must be some mistake.
If I follow my own plans, I’ll disobey the very goddess I want to serve. But how can I trust the gods have my best interest at heart?

Daughter of the Goddess is a Young Adult Fairy Tale retelling of the Greek myth Eros and Psyche, set in a fantasy world.

Q&A with author Rita Webb
Where did you get the idea for Daughter of the Goddess?
My favorite Greek myth is the story of Eros and Psyche. I think it’s the only Greek myth I read with anywhere close to a happy ending, even if there was a great deal of turmoil getting there.
The philosopher in me always wondered what a soul really was. When someone says, “That music is full of soul,” what does that mean?
So Nephecia epitomizes what I believe soul means. I took her out of Ancient Greece and put her into a world of my own making.
How did the name “Psyche” become “Nephecia”?
I searched other languages for the word “Soul” and found nephesh in Hebrew.
How did the name “Eros” become “Gabin”?
Gabin is a variation of Gabriel (according to my baby name book), that means “Hero of God.” I remember something about it meaning “Beloved by God” too.
Why do you write stories?
I have 3 daughters, ages 15, 13, and 11, and I want them to grow up believing in their dreams. The only way I can see that happening is if I believe in my own.
What’s your secret to success?
My husband. He believes in me, and when I’m discouraged, he never lets me give up.
What one piece of advice do you have for new writers?
Read, write, study, write some more. Never give up. Okay, that’s 5 pieces of advice.

I haven't changed much. Still always have a book (or two) in my hand or creating stories in my head, and although I don't have any bunny slippers, I love writing in my jammies and snuggly slipper socks.
With my husband TJ (my own cuddly werewolf), I home-school our three girls, who keep us busy with art, science projects, books to read, dance classes, and walks about the park.

Perfect for readers of romance, urban fantasy, fairy stories and LGBT.
“Moribund is a little bit Throne of Glass, a little bit Buffy, and a whole lot sexy.” – Skye Allen, author of The Songbird Thief
EXCERPT:
In this scene, Syl and her squad are at a club where Euphoria’s playing. Syl’s never seen Euphoria, and she’s excited, but Fiann’s acting weird, treating Syl poorly and trying to bully her into double-dating the Dickinson twins, Brody and Bryce. Syl ducks into the bathroom to catch her breath.
* * * *
I take a deep breath and pat the nail where it rests secretly against my skin. Okay, Syl. It’s go-time. I shove the door open. Head held high, I step out into the flashing lights of the club, and bam! run right into someone.
“Steady on.” Strong hands keep me from falling on my butt, and during our awkward two-step, I catch a glimpse of raven-dark hair and sapphire-blue eyes ringed in gold. Her deep chuckle is like rolling thunder.
“I-I’m sorry.” I look up, brushing my red curls out of my face.
Whoa. My poor heart. She’s gorgeous. Her eyes are all intense and glowy as she searches my face. The ache in my chest gets worse—but also, somehow better.
What is happening? I reach out and touch her hand. Where I want to feel skin, I feel the leather of a glove.
Still, a jolt passes between us.
She lingers, her pretty face a bit dazed. She looks from our touching hands back up. “You…”
She feels it too. Whatever it is.
And dear heaven and all the angels, she’s… Wow. She’s something else. High cheekbones, full lips curved into a smile that’s part mischief, part mayhem. Her bronze skin holds an inner glow even in the dim light of the club, and those eyes… When she looks at me, the club, the flashing lights, all the people—everything falls away and there is only the two of us.
“Who are you?” she whispers, and I hear it because she’s leaned in close, so close I can feel her warm breath on my cheek.
“I…” Introduce yourself already! But I’m all tongue-tied, frozen like the world’s biggest dork. My fingers find the strip of skin between her glove and her sleeve. Ohhhh…so warm and silky, and… What the heck are you doing, Syl?
She chuckles again, more rumbly, rolling thunder. “Are you all right?”
Yes. No. Urgggg… I step back, my cheeks on fire. She smells like all the good things in autumn—crisp leaves and harvest moons and sultry bourbon vanilla. Whoa. I’m getting a little swoony. “I-I’m fine. Really. Are you?”
“Yes, but I’d like to…” She swallows hard, seeming almost shy beneath her super-cool exterior. She licks her bottom lip, and I nearly pass out right there. “Will you meet me after the show?”
Did mine ears deceive me? Girl works fast! Plus, I can tell she’s at least a year older than me. “I…” Say something, silly!
“I’m sorry.” She pulls her hand from mine and steps away.
The loss of her touch leaves me cold. Moments from losing her to the crowd, I pluck up my courage. “What’s your name?”
That smile curves her lips like a kept secret. “I’m Euphoria.”
Euphoria. Whaaaaaaaaatttt? Seriously, Syl, only you could carry on an entire freakin conversation with your goth idol and not even recognize her.
But no…there’s something else, some other reason I didn’t recognize her right off the bat. I just can’t put my finger on it. Plus, I’m still swoony.
“I have to go.” She leans in, whispers in my ear, “After?”
I feel like only my heart can answer that question, but before I can even blink, she’s gone. Like gone-gone. One moment she’s in front of me; the next she’s vanished. Poof!
Euphoria. And she wants to see me “after.”
Crazy. This is crazy.
I shade my eyes from the blue-and-red houselights and look to the stage. After about ten minutes, the house music fades away, and the stage goes dark.
A lone silhouette appears there, backlit. It’s her.
Heat races through my body, my hand tingling from her touch. My stomach does a lazy barrel-roll, and those butterflies everyone’s always told me about? Yeah, apparently mine are Olympic gymnasts, because my whole stomach feels like it’s going for the Gold.
Oooookay. Chill out. I touch the iron nail beneath my dress. Gotta thank Glamma for the lucky pendant.
I step out of the bathroom and beeline toward the stage. I feel feverish, mad as hatter and a March hare all rolled into one.
I only know this: I have to see her again.
I’ve always hated crowds, but without another thought, I push my way to the stage. Toward Euphoria, and toward the “after” that will bring me back to her.

Secret Heir (Dynasty #1) by M.J. Prince

Secret Heir
by M.J. Prince

My rating: 4 stars

Series: Dynasty - Book 1
Publisher: Royal Press; 1 edition (February 27, 2018)
Publication Date: February 27, 2018
Genre: Fantasy Romance
Print Length: 348 pages
Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble
Since the beginning of time, tales have been told about Eden. But all the stories are wrong.

Running parallel alongside Earth, but never touching, there exists not just a garden, but an entire world of vivid colours and breathtaking beauty where the Seraph reside.

Jazmine has lived in ten different foster homes, in ten different towns and all her life she has felt like she doesn’t belong – not in the trailer park which happens to be foster home number ten, not anywhere on Earth.

After a universe shattering revelation, she discovers why. Far from being the nothing and no one, with no past and no future, that Jazmine had always believed herself to be, she discovers that she is in fact an heir to one of the seven remaining Seraph Dynasties.

She is Jazmine Evenstar, the last heir to the sovereign Evenstar Dynasty.

Thrust into the world of wealth and privilege in which the impossibly beautiful and equally cruel Dynasty heirs reside, Jazmine is forced to manoeuvre the tangled web that holds the Dynasties together.

Against the backdrop of breathtaking star filled nights, sweeping coastlines, grand marble halls and decadent palaces, Jazmine tries to find her place in this beautiful new world whilst fighting not to lose herself in the process.

But the fairy tale quickly unravels.

Half human and the illegitimate daughter of the late suicide King of Eden, the other Dynasty heirs make it clear that Jazmine does not belong in their world.

Raphael St. Tristan, heir to the rival sovereign St. Tristan Dynasty and next in line to the throne of Eden, the guy with the face of an angel but who is as wicked as the devil himself, promises to break her.

Jazmine quickly learns that the beauty of Eden is nothing but a deception as she uncovers the secrets festering at the heart of it. But can she disentangle herself from the web of deception and intrigue that the Dynasty heirs have spun? Can she stop herself from falling into Raphael St. Tristan’s trap before he can fulfil his promise to shatter her completely? Or are those stories about Eden true after all and will she be foolish enough to taste the forbidden fruit that is Eden itself?

Secret Heir (Dynasty #1) by M.J. Prince

Secret Heir (Dynasty, #1)Jazmine never felt she belonged. Tossed from foster home to foster home, she never fit in. Life was brutal, she learned to develop a tough outer layer, but inside is a different story. Isn’t there anywhere she can find happiness? What has she done to deserve so much turmoil?

The answers came, but in the most unbelievable way from a parallel world, from “Eden,” and Jazmine will discover she is part of this world, too, but will she fit in there? Is this where she belongs or will she find more heartache and loneliness…or worse…

Jazmine has gone from being almost non-existent to being the heir apparent to a powerful dynasty in a world where magic is part of life, but the rivalries between dynasties is vicious and petty jealousies and suspicions run rampant, even in a world filled with powerful beings. Her greatest enemy is the young man from a rival dynasty and his vitriol is venomous, but why? Seems love and hate definitely are two sides to the same coin, but can Jazmine trust the game of hot and cold Raphael is playing?

SECRET HEIR by M.J. Prince is a high turmoil, high angst tale of forbidden love, jealousy and deceit for one girl who really seems to be getting the short end of life’s stick. The writing is excellent, prepare to feel your gut churn, to want to jump in and rattle a few haughty cages. My distress level was at peak levels, what with the back and forth romance, not romance, between Raphael and Jazmine. Why, you ask? Because it was all over power, control, appearances and petty jealousy. I was disappointed in Jazmine, after all she has faced in life, she jumped into Raph’s arms far too easily, was far too easy to manipulate.

SECRET HEIR reads like a young adult tale depicting the emotional immaturity of teens, young teens. Yet, the sensual, sexual moments where Raph and Jazmine are together, in private, while the public sees the conflict was just wrong. I believe on Earth, we would be having an intervention. Romance has conflicts, yes, but healthy conflict is good, these two are far from healthy. M.J. Prince does tell a good tale, it just isn’t quite New Adult to me and certainly isn’t Young Adult. That said, yes, the writing and M.J. Prince's talent is not in question...it certainly got a rise out of me and I most definitely was immersed in this world!

I received a complimentary ARC edition from M.J. Prince! This is my honest review.

Whisky Sharp: Unraveled by Lauren Dane

Unraveled
My Rating: 3.5 stars
Written by: Lauren Dane
Series: Whiskey Sharp (Book 1)
Mass Market Paperback: 352 pages
Publisher: HQN
Publication Date: January 30, 2018
ISBN-10: 0373799381
ISBN-13: 978-0373799381
Genre: Contemporary Romance

The sharpest ache comes from wanting what you think you can't have

Maybe Dolan has lived independent, free-spirited and unattached since leaving home at sixteen. Whiskey Sharp, Seattle's sexy vintage-styled barbershop and whiskey bar, gave her a job and a reason to put down roots. Cutting hair by day, losing herself drumming in a punk rock band by night, she's got it good.

But a longtime crush that turns into a hot, edgy night with brooding and bearded Alexsei Petrov makes it a hell of a lot better.

Maybe's blunt attitude and carnal smile hooked Alexsei from the start. Protecting people is part of his nature and Maybe is meant to be his even if she doesn't know it. Yet. He can't help himself from wanting to protect and care for her.

But Maybe's fiery independent spirit means pushing back when Alexsei goes too far. Still, he's not afraid to do a little pushing of his own to get what he wants her in his life, and his bed, for good. Maybe's more intoxicating than all the liquor on his shelf and he's not afraid to ride the blade's edge to bind her to him.
Unraveled (Whiskey Sharp, #1)Unraveled by Lauren Dane

Maybe was a hair dresser at a local barbershop/whiskey bar. After years of watching women circle Alexsei, they hook up because they are both unattached at the same time.

Maybe challenges Alexsei to see the world through her eyes, while Maybe needs the security Alexsei can offer. They truly are friends before they become more.

Maybe goes through some very difficult times with her parents and in the end, I pretty much hated them…

The flip side to that is Alexsei’s family. They are loud, lots of food and adopted both Maybe and her sister, Rachel, even before Alexsei knew what was happening.

I liked Unraveled. Hot Russian, rocker/hair dresser drums and family.

I received this ARC copy of Unraveled from Harlequin -HQN. This is my honest and voluntary review. Unraveled is set for publication Jan. 30, 2018

When she flees, little does she realize this wolf loves to chase. And when he catches the woman he wants? She’ll become the Alpha’s Mate.

The Alpha's Mate (Fabian Garoux #3)The Alpha's Mate by Eve Langlais

The Alpha’s Mate is fast, fun and full of sizzle.

Jumping from the frying pan into fire, Vivienne ignites Fabian’s hunting instincts when she runs from him. To top it off Vivienne can’t remember anything. Both Vivienne and Fabian quickly realize that Vivienne is much safer under his watch because there is someone out there that really wants Vivienne dead.

Lots of sexual chemistry but not a lot of developed romance. A shorter read, so it is perfect for those who enjoy easy, entertaining novellas with a heated shifter romance.
