Six Reasons Why YA Paranormal Won’t Die

Readers and authors love to debate when something will “die” in publishing. It would be morbid, except they are talking about a trend or a popular movement in literature. I’m pretty excited to explain why I believe this genre is here to stay because it’s what I write and my favorite genre to read.

1) Talented Writers

Great writers will always draw readers. YA paranormal has authors like Cassandra Clare, Richelle Mead, Stephenie Meyer, and Rachel Caine. Their writing is smooth and clean and clear. We readers tear through their books because these authors write compelling stories with intricate world building and mass appeal. They take well known supernatural creatures like angels & demons or vampires and create a fascinating take on the mythology and the rules of their creatures’ world.

Even when we put aside the biggest names, the genre is filled with talented authors who create amazing worlds with unforgettable characters and great plots: Aprilynne Pike, Dawn Metcalf, Paige McKenzie, Brenda Drake, C.J. Redwine, K.R. Conway, and Andrea Cremer—just to list a few. These authors create stories worth reading. They bring to life fairies, werewolves, ghosts, witches, and psychics with a twist on the familiar folklore or a radical rewriting of it. Either way, they pull us into their worlds and keep us coming back for more.

2) Loyal Fans

Confession time, when I read a contemporary, I can’t help thinking something is missing. Oh right, the paranormal. Ghosts, vampires, mermaids, zombies, and all the other supernatural creatures have a foothold in my heart and my reading tastes. I need them in a story for it to feel complete. That is never going to change.

A teen who loves paranormal becomes an adult who loves paranormal. Once we have a taste for paranormal, we never tire of it, which means there will always be a marketplace for paranormal because of us—its loyal fans.

3) We Need to Believe

The idea that there is more than what we see intrigues us. Not only that, but it gives us hope. Maybe our loved ones aren’t gone, maybe they can still see us as ghosts. Maybe there is more than what we sense. Maybe we can be more than we think.

Belief, even in a possibility, can make life so much better for us because belief feeds hope and we need more hope in this world.

4) The Greatest Escape

When we read the pages of a contemporary, we don’t leave our world behind. Not the way we do in a vampire novel. We have to learn the rules of this new world, making us slip completely out of what we know and immerse ourselves in what the author has created. Paranormals takes us away from our lives and lets us exist in a world we could never inhabit during the day. It is the greatest escape ever.

Closing the pages of a YA paranormal, we need a few minutes to re-aclimate to our own mundane world without shadowhunters, vampires, witches, psychics and all the other supernaturals that we adore. That’s something powerful and unique to the intricate world building in paranormals that provides us with a complete break from our own reality.

5) The Allure of Secrets

What is the most interesting thing? A secret. As teens, sharing secrets was serious business. Finding out a secret was powerful and could destroy someone’s world. Or at least it felt that way back then.

No matter what age we are, secrets have power. They pull us in. With paranormals, authors draw back a veil on the unknown and invite us into a secret world that exists solely in their mind. Most of the time, the paranormal is hidden and required to remain so, which makes it the ultimate secret for us to partake in.

6) We Get to Transform and Grow

YA Paranormals are all about transformation and growth. The characters grow and they transform into supernatural creatures, learn to co-exist with supernatural creatures, or battle supernatural creatures. Sometimes, they even team up with supernatural creatures to fight other humans. YA Paranormals allow us to see good and bad through so many different lenses and challenge us to make different choices about what is good and bad.

There is something utterly satisfying about taking a journey with a character where they grow and transform; and in the end, we do too.
